One thing to keep in mind above all, is that her primary purpose is to help Lightning restore her own fragmented soul, and thereby save Lightning herself.

Throughout the story, she also teaches Lightning several subtle lessons, all in an attempt to save Lightning's soul. The following are her lessons. The Children of Chaos told me the whole story Poor Yeul, she left a hole in his heart that just can't be filled. It's not surprising though, considering that she died in his arms.

In those last moments they had, she looked up and said to him, 'Don't cry, Noel. We will meet again in the future'. Like you'd believe that right? But Yeul was a seeress who could see the future. Now Noel knew that, so when she said they would be reunited in the future, what else could he do?

He had to believe her. And so, he's been waiting ever since. The poor sad fool. Centuries and centuries of waiting, all on his own. The promise of a new future gave him hope. The lesson of Noel is one of grief. Because Noel doesn't let go of Yeul, he suffers for it. Centuries and centuries of waiting.

To eventually fall for a false vision because that is what he desperately wants -- desperate enough to attempt to kill Lightning, a friend, for it to come true. He would've become a monster to make the vision true, which Lightning eventually calls out: "Do I look crushed to you?

I'm going to see Serah again. I'm going to fight for as long as it takes. Give whatever it takes. Even if it's my humanity. But you're not like me, Noel. Even if it's for the future. Even if it is to see Yeul again. You don't have it in you to kill me. You're still human. You killed a friend once, in order to save the world. And you can't do it again.

You know it's true. I can see it in your eyes. And I've got things to do before time runs out. You might still have scruples, but I don't. Not anymore. To save Serah, I'll throw everything else away. I'll even be God's little pawn. No one's going to stop me from trying, not even you. You want to find Yeul? Then find her in death. Or could become just as desperate as Noel if her own grief for Serah isn't checked.

It is true that she will 'throw everything else away to save Serah". This is what will happen to Lightning if she can't let go of Serah, and believe in a false vision -- such as the false vision put in place by Bhunivelze.. She can be manipulated with that bargaining chip; she will be manipulated; and she has been manipulated.

Even without that, she would suffer for centuries as well. This is the first Main Quest most players are likely to beat first. So it's a proper first warning from Lumina. She is a mischievous, capricious girl who at times appears to be helping Lightning while at other points she hinders her.

She has lived the past five hundred years while crossing paths with old friends of Lightning, including Snow , Sazh , and Vanille , and is at home in the Chaos, able to summon forth beasts from its mist.

Lumina frequently crosses paths with Lightning, even appearing within Lightning's mind as she travels to and from the Ark, where their conversations can't be overheard by Hope and by extension Bhunivelze.

She seems to know a great deal about Lightning, using this to her advantage as she alternately taunts and goads her. It is revealed near the end of the game that Lumina is in fact a piece of Lightning. Specifically, the piece of Lightning's heart in which she wished to keep Serah's memory safe, and that also served as Lightning's emotional core and her softer side, Claire Farron.
