It will be interesting to see the further repercussions not having a co-host will have for Carly and the channel as it will surely be a recurring source of humor. Moreover, Mosley is already winning audiences over by capitalizing on iCarly meatball merchandising and chasing a date out of the apartment wearing a chicken suit in what was potentially a love affair gone wrong.
Freddie is remembered as the dorky and loveable neighbor with an overprotective mother. However, while his mother is still the same old overprotective character from the original series, Freddie has been through the wringer.
Audiences quickly learn Freddie has been through two failed marriages and has lost everything including an enterprising tech start-up. All he has left is his new daughter, whom he and his second wife had previously adopted.
She is definitely a welcome addition to the show as someone who will be the source of grief for many of the characters as she attempts to become an internet star herself. Having a rebellious, almost Loki-like , daughter of this nature is also perfect for Freddie who was always the grown-up of the group to begin with, and is now forced to deal with a child more akin to Sam than himself.
Those who grew up enjoying the original series will certainly find the revival not only entertaining but also relatable. This is because the series is exploring more mature themes than its predecessor as a result of the aged-up characters. In the first three episodes, the series has already tackled breakups, rebounds, the dangers of social media, and have featured near-constant alcohol consumption.
These are all storylines that could never have been explored on Nickelodeon. In contrast, in the age of doxxing revealing private information about someone such as their home address or SSN online , it now seems insane that Carly and her friends not only revealed their full names and school in their web show, but the name of their apartment building.
Instead, we see situations that are too real to grasp the entirety of our attention. Carly goes to Webicon to receive a lifetime achievement award, only to find that the convention is as poorly planned as the Fyre Festival. All of these plotlines have one thing in common: instead of celebrating the potential of the internet like in the original series, they rehash terrible internet-specific narratives that are neither unique nor particularly engaging.
Even worse are the episode-long story arcs that attempt to address internet culture specifically, such as the third episode of the series, in which Carly makes a funny face that becomes the basis for a meme. The episode incorporates food Instagrammers and accusations of people being problematic in a way that is not only shockingly unfunny, but also hits the audience over the head with its interpretation of how late millennials and early Gen Z behave on the internet.
This feeling of repetition, in turn, is exacerbated by the fact that episode-long plotlines are essentially inconsequential for the rest of the series. When Freddie invests his entire life savings into a multi-level-marketing series, we see the consequences for one episode only, and in the next episode everything is somehow fine again.
Triplett is undeniably talented, but her character is annoying by virtue of being a smart-aleck child in a show intended for adults. The show follows a group of best friends as they create a webcast for and about kids while grappling with everyday problems and adventures. Picking up nearly 10 years later, it follows original influencer Carly Shay Cosgrove , her brother Spencer Trainor , and friend Freddie Benson Kress as they navigate work, love, and family relationships in their twenties.
Some will keep watching while others will tune out but, overall, I think there will be enough interest to secure a second season. Subscribe for free alerts on iCarly cancellation or renewal news. What do you think? Are you glad that the iCarly TV show has been renewed for a second season?
