That maritime tradition continues today, and the descendants of the early Portuguese and Italian fishermen from that old fishing village remain active in town. This year over a million visitors will come to Sausalito, most of them between March and October.
With the Sausalito Ferry and the Golden Gate Bridge both anchored here, that tradition continues today. The artist community is still large and more diverse today, and the floating homes form entire neighborhoods in northern Sausalito. The Sausalito Visitors Kiosk is staffed by local volunteers during daytime hours with extended hours during the summer months and is co-sponsored by the City and by the Sausalito Chamber of Commerce. The volunteers there are also a great resource for suggestions and directions. In most years we get occasional rain from November through April. We always recommend dressing in layers, so you can add or subtract clothing if the weather gets too warm or cool.
I usually keep a sweater or windbreaker in my car in case the afternoon breezes turn from cool to cold. Sausalito has two very different wine tasting rooms , each with its own personality and emphasis. One is tied to a culinary school on the shore of San Francisco Bay that gives it great small-plate dining to go with the wine.

Golden Gate Bridge The northern end of the Golden Gate Bridge is located in Sausalito, and many of its most spectacular views are on our side of the Bay. Sausalito's houseboat community showcases anything from renovated architectural gems to repurposed barges to vessels that need some serious TLC.
These are private homes, so be respectful when wandering around. Liberty Dock and Issaquah Dock are good places to start. Army Corps of Engineers, is an acre-and-a-half scale reconstruction of the Bay Area's waterways. From an observation platform, watch tides ebb and flow every 15 minutes, and marvel at just how big the bay really is.
